Frequently asked questions about private vs. statutory

How reliable is the private premium estimate in this calculator?
The private premium depends on entry age, health, insurer and the level of benefits you choose. The calculator shows a typical market guide value for a healthy entry, not a binding offer. Your actual premium is only fixed after the health questions and can be higher depending on pre-existing conditions.
From what income can I switch to private health insurance as an employee?
Employees can only switch when their gross salary exceeds the Versicherungspflichtgrenze. In 2026 it is €77,400 a year, which is €6,450 a month. Self-employed people and civil servants are free to choose regardless of this threshold.
Why does statutory insurance often come out ahead with children?
In statutory health insurance, children and a partner with a low income are covered free of charge through family insurance. In private health insurance, every person pays their own premium. With several children, this shifts the numbers clearly in favor of statutory insurance.
