Frequently asked questions about the family comparison, statutory vs. private

Why do children pay their own premium in private health insurance, while statutory health insurance covers them free of charge?
Private health insurance has no family insurance. Each family member needs their own policy with their own premium, based on age, health status and plan. Typical amounts are €80 to €200 per child and month. In statutory health insurance, children are covered free of charge through family insurance, as long as at least one parent is a statutory member and the child has no significant income of their own. This difference often makes statutory insurance cheaper with several children, while private insurance is often cheaper for the policyholder.
When does the comparison favor private health insurance even though I have children?
The turning point depends on three factors: the policyholder's income, the number of children and the age at entry into private insurance. With a high income, early entry and one or two children, private cover for the family can still be cheaper. This is especially true if the policyholder avoids the statutory Beitragsbemessungsgrenze of €5,812.50 per month by going private. Once the children start working and pay their own contributions, the statutory advantage ends anyway. We are happy to calculate this for your case.
What happens to my partner's family insurance if they earn more?
Free family insurance only applies up to a monthly income of €565 (2026, one seventh of the statutory reference value). Anyone who earns more needs their own membership, either compulsorily insured as an employee with the employer paying half, or voluntarily insured as a self-employed person paying the full contribution. Mini-jobs also have their own limit of €603. The calculator covers these cases under partner status.
