Common questions about the employer contribution

Does my employer pay the full contribution even if my premium is very low?
No. Your employer always pays half of your actual private health insurance premium, but no more than the statutory maximum amount. If your premium is €400 per month, you receive an employer contribution of €200, not €508.59. The maximum amount is an upper limit, not a fixed amount.
Does the employer contribution change if my premium rises through a premium adjustment?
The employer contribution rises in proportion until it reaches the statutory maximum of €508.59 for health insurance. Beyond that, your employer bears no further costs. If your new premium is so high that half of it exceeds the cap, the employer contribution stays frozen at the maximum amount.
Do I have a right to the employer contribution to my private health insurance during parental leave?
During parental leave, your employment is suspended. The statutory right to an employer contribution under § 257 SGB V lapses during this time, because it is tied to active employment. When you return to work, the right comes back in full. Ask your employer whether they pay a voluntary contribution during parental leave.
