The results in detail

Survey design and method

We evaluated two separate questionnaires, one for people with statutory and one for people with private insurance. Adults with comprehensive health insurance in Germany could take part.

  • Participants: more than 2,200 in total
  • Split: around 1,700 with statutory, around 550 with private insurance
  • Duration: almost 3 months
  • Distribution: email, website, social media and prize draw portals, with 6 vouchers raffled

The survey is explicitly not representative, because participation was voluntary and part of the privately insured respondents are our clients. Because of the high number of participants, it still shows meaningful trends.

Results from people with statutory insurance

  • Thoughts of switching: 45% have already looked into switching to private health insurance. Reasons: shorter waiting times for specialists (30%), better medical benefits (27%), lower premiums (17%), treatment by the chief physician (15%).
  • Overall satisfaction: around 28% satisfied, around 35% dissatisfied, almost 37% neutral.
  • Value for money: 40% positive, 36% average, 24% negative.
  • Contributions: 48% find them high or very high, around 40% average, 12% low. Only 11% consider their contribution fair.
  • Specialist appointments: 56% negative, 30% neutral, 14% satisfied. This is the area with the highest dissatisfaction.

Results from privately insured people

  • Overall satisfaction: more than 70% satisfied or very satisfied, 21% neutral, 8% dissatisfied.
  • Satisfaction after switching: 47% good, 8% very good, 32% neutral, around 13% critical.
  • Medical benefits: 79% satisfied or very satisfied, 12% neutral, 9% dissatisfied.
  • Premiums: 47% find them high or very high, 41% reasonable, 12% low.
  • Appointments: 76% positive, 13% neutral, 11% dissatisfied.
  • Thoughts of returning to statutory health insurance: 62% have thought about it at some point. The main reason is concern about the cost burden in old age (45%).

Assessment and comparison

There is no clear winner, both systems have their strengths. In satisfaction, in medical benefits and above all in appointments, private health insurance does clearly better in our survey.

The central sore point in both systems remains the level of premiums. And the willingness to switch goes both ways: 45% of people with statutory insurance are considering private health insurance, while 62% of privately insured people have thought about returning to statutory health insurance.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.

It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.
