Common questions about the statutory contribution

Do rental and investment income count toward the contribution?
If you are self-employed and voluntarily insured, your statutory health insurance fund bases the contribution on your total financial capacity. Besides profit from self-employment, this includes rental income, investment income and pensions, capped by the Beitragsbemessungsgrenze  of €5,812.50 per month. So enter your total gross income, not just the profit from your main occupation.
Why do many self-employed people pay the minimum contribution even though their profit is lower?
For self-employed people, statutory health insurance uses a minimum assessment basis of €1,318.33 per month. If you earn less, your contribution is still based on this notional amount. Only above this limit does the contribution rise with your actual income, until it is capped at the Beitragsbemessungsgrenze.
With or without Krankengeld: what does the reduced rate mean for me?
The reduced rate of 14.0% only applies if you give up your statutory right to Krankengeld KrankengeldStatutory sick pay from the statutory health insurance fund. It starts when the employer stops paying wages, usually from the seventh week of illness.. The saving of 0.6 percentage points is small, while you are left without income replacement during a longer illness. Many self-employed people cover this risk with private Krankentagegeld.
