BenefitsClaimCancelling your policyBack to statutory insuranceTerminated without noticeBefore you compare plans, the first question is whether a switch to private health insurance makes sense for you and is legally possible. Before you apply, check your income and your occupational status, your health information with possible risk surcharges, and the right timing. In practice, most mistakes happen during this preparation: applications filed too early, incomplete health information, or a start of cover that does not match the notice period of statutory health insurance.
The Decision Check looks at your situation from five angles and shows you what should be settled before you apply.
We also advise against it if private health insurance does not suit your situation.

Employees may switch if their regular annual pay exceeds the Jahresarbeitsentgeltgrenze of €77,400 (2026). What counts is your regular income. A one-off bonus does not count in this check.
Self-employed people, freelancers, civil servants and students are eligible regardless of income. For them, this threshold does not apply at all.
The health questions decide whether an insurer accepts the application, asks for a risk surcharge or sets a benefit exclusion. If you start with a formal rejection, later applications with other insurers may become harder, because an open rejection must be disclosed in the application.
We have supported over 5,000 applications with health questions. That is why we always recommend the anonymous risk enquiry with at least five insurers in parallel as the first step. It clarifies the assessment in advance without creating a record with the insurer.
Possible results:
A full rejection happens only in exceptional cases.
After the anonymous risk enquiry comes the formal application. All health questions must be answered completely and truthfully under § 19 VVG. Incomplete or incorrect answers can lead to the contract being challenged later, even years after it was signed.
Processing typically takes two to six weeks. The result is the declaration of acceptance, which sets the start of cover and the terms.
Only submit your cancellation to statutory health insurance once the declaration of acceptance is in writing.
The start of cover is set in the application. Canceling statutory health insurance is subject to a notice period of two months to the end of a month under § 175 SGB V. If you cancel in March, you leave on May 31 at the earliest. The start of cover should then be June 1.
The recommended order: wait for the declaration of acceptance, then cancel statutory health insurance, then set up the first premium by direct debit.
Whether the switch makes economic sense in the long run depends on several factors. Our check follows three rules of thumb:
In our advice we often see that a switch without this suitability check is regretted after a few years. All three rules of thumb should therefore be clearly met before the formal application starts.
In practice, a switch rarely fails because of eligibility alone. Most problems arise in the process, above all with timing and health information.
A common mistake is to cancel statutory health insurance before the binding declaration of acceptance from the private insurer is in. Only once it is clear that the insurer accepts the application, and on what terms, should the cancellation of your current cover be finalized. Otherwise you create needless pressure and, in the worst case, even a gap in cover.
Health information is especially critical. Many applicants leave out diagnoses because they consider them harmless or healed. Only the specific question in the application counts. Incomplete or inaccurate answers can later be far more serious than a risk surcharge at the outset.
Mistakes also happen with the start of cover if the start of private health insurance does not match the end of statutory insurance. A start that is too early costs double premiums. If it is too late, there are problems with proving the follow-on insurance.
Another pitfall is the missing suitability check. Before the application, your income and family planning belong on the table, just like your health, your career outlook and the quality of the plan.
Realistically four to eight weeks. Two to four weeks of that are for processing the application. The rest is preparation, the notice period under § 175 SGB V and agreeing on the date.
Deviating from this order almost always causes problems:

It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.
