Premium increase at ARAG: what now?

Exclusive tips from our experts on how to handle your premium adjustment.

01

Assess first, then act

The first reaction to a premium adjustment is often anger. First get a clear overview before you think about consequences. What matters is how high the adjustment really is and what your plan offers for it.

02

Check the details in the letter

Go through the letter point by point. Which plan is affected, from when the new premium applies and how the adjustment is justified. Only with this information can you plan the next step.

03

Plan change instead of a rash decision

Before you think about switching to another insurer, check whether a plan change under § 204 VVG within ARAG makes sense. ARAG offers a wide range of plans that opens up concrete options for a change. This is often the simpler way to a lower premium without setting up your cover completely from scratch.

04

Compare benefits

When you look at another plan, the overall picture counts. An attractive price is of little use if key benefits that you will need later are missing.

05

Get an independent second opinion

A neutral second opinion brings clarity. We know the plans of ARAG and check together with you which option protects your ageing reserves and can still lower the premium.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.

It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.

Financial stability of ARAG compared

ARAG is active in the private health insurance market as a family-run group. Its focus is on health and supplementary insurance. The following figures put the financial position into context, each compared with the insurer's own ten-year average and the industry average (as of 2024).

1.8%

Administrative cost ratio

Below the industry average of 2.9 percent: a lean, efficient cost structure.

14.6%

Equity ratio

Below the industry average of 20.9 percent: a smaller safety cushion, to be considered in the overall picture.

3.5

Complaints ratio

Above the industry average of 2.8 per 100,000: more complaints than the market average.

How to read the financial position

ARAG shows a mixed but fundamentally sound picture compared with the industry. An above-average provision for premium refunds and low administrative costs speak for stable premiums. Points to note are a net interest yield below market level and an increased complaints ratio. ARAG belongs to the ARAG Group, which gives it a clear place in the market.

Frequently asked questions

Do I keep my ageing reserves if I change plan within ARAG?

Your ageing reserves are kept in full with an internal change under § 204 VVG. Only a switch to another insurer means that the calculated reserves are lost.

On what basis does ARAG increase the premium?

An adjustment is only permitted under the conditions of § 203 VVG. It requires a lasting change in benefit expenditure or mortality rates and must be reviewed and approved by an independent trustee.

How quickly do I need to respond?

A fixed deadline applies above all to the special right of termination under § 205 (4) VVG, namely two months after receipt of the notice. You can approach the internal change under § 204 VVG with more flexibility in timing.
