Keep calm
Stay calm after the notice. An increase does not mean that your plan is bad. Take your time to look at what amount you will pay and what cover you get for it.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.
It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.

AXA is one of the large private health insurers in Germany. Its focus is on full cover and supplementary insurance for private and business customers. The following figures put the financial position into context, each compared with the insurer's own ten-year average and the industry average (as of 2024).
Above the industry average of 2.8 per 100,000: more complaints than the market average.
Below the industry average of 20.9 percent: a smaller safety cushion, to be considered in the overall picture.
Below the industry average of 2.9 percent: a lean, efficient cost structure.
| Indicator | AXA 2024 | 10-year average | Industry average |
|---|---|---|---|
| RfB ratio | 31.9% | 30.7% | 37.4% |
| RfB allocation ratio | 6.8% | 9.9% | 10.5% |
| Equity ratio | 0.9% | 5.2% | 20.9% |
| Net interest yield | 2.3% | 3.0% | 2.8% |
| Administrative cost ratio | 1.9% | 1.9% | 2.9% |
| Claims ratio | 83.2% | 79.0% | 75.1% |
| Acquisition cost ratio | 6.1% | 6.2% | 8.0% |
| Complaints ratio (per 100,000) | 6.6 | 7.8 | 2.8 |
AXA shows an uneven picture compared with the industry. Low administrative costs speak for stable premiums. Points to note are a provision for premium refunds below the industry average, a net interest yield below market level and an increased complaints ratio. AXA belongs to the international AXA Group based in Paris, which gives it a clear place in the market.
With a plan change within AXA under § 204 VVG, the reserves are kept. You only lose them if you change company.
The premium may not rise arbitrarily. § 203 VVG only allows an adjustment if benefit expenditure or mortality rates have changed permanently. In addition, an independent trustee reviews every increase.
There is no fixed deadline for an internal plan change under § 204 VVG. If you want to use the special right of termination under § 205 (4) VVG, a deadline of two months after receipt of the notice applies. An early review gives you the most room to act.
