Premium increase at Generali: what now?

Exclusive tips from our experts on how to handle your premium adjustment.

01

No hasty steps

A premium adjustment is normal in private health insurance and no reason for hasty steps. Check objectively how much your premium rises and whether the benefits still fit your needs.

02

Keep an eye on deadlines

Look at when the increase applies, how high the new premium is and what reason the insurer gives. This way you see faster whether you need to act and which options are realistic.

03

Plan change instead of a rash decision

Before you think about switching to another insurer, check whether a plan change under § 204 VVG within Generali makes sense. This is often the simpler way to a lower premium without setting up your cover completely from scratch.

04

Compare benefits consciously

A cheaper plan saves money, but sometimes at the expense of important benefits. Compare carefully which benefits remain and which are dropped before you change your mind.

05

Use advice with private health insurance experience

With premium questions in particular, an independent assessment is worth it. We know the plan range of Generali and show you which options really fit your situation, without losing your ageing reserves.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.

How to read the financial position

Generali shows an uneven picture compared with the industry. Points to note are a provision for premium refunds below the industry average, comparatively high administrative costs, a net interest yield below market level and an increased complaints ratio. Generali belongs to the international Generali Group, which gives it a clear place in the market.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my ageing reserves if I change plan?

With a plan change within Generali under § 204 VVG, the reserves are kept. You only lose them if you change company.

Is the premium increase at Generali lawful at all?

The premium may not rise arbitrarily. § 203 VVG only allows an adjustment if benefit expenditure or mortality rates have changed permanently. In addition, an independent trustee reviews every increase.

How much time do I have after the premium increase?

There is no fixed deadline for an internal plan change under § 204 VVG. If you want to use the special right of termination under § 205 (4) VVG, a deadline of two months after receipt of the notice applies. An early review gives you the most room to act.
