Premium increase at Nürnberger: what now?

Exclusive tips from our experts on how to handle your premium adjustment.

01

Assess first, then act

The first reaction to a premium adjustment is often anger. First get a clear overview before you think about consequences. What matters is how high the adjustment really is and what your plan offers for it.

02

Check the details in the letter

Go through the letter point by point. Which plan is affected, from when the new premium applies and how the adjustment is justified. Only with this information can you plan the next step.

03

Plan change instead of a rash decision

Before you think about switching to another insurer, check whether a plan change under § 204 VVG within Nürnberger makes sense. This is often the simpler way to a lower premium without setting up your cover completely from scratch.

04

Compare benefits

When you look at another plan, the overall picture counts. An attractive price is of little use if key benefits that you will need later are missing.

05

Use advice with private health insurance experience

With premium questions in particular, an independent assessment is worth it. We know the plan range of Nürnberger and show you which options really fit your situation, without losing your ageing reserves.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.

It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.

How to read the financial position

Nürnberger shows an uneven picture compared with the industry. A low complaints ratio speaks for stable premiums. Points to note are a provision for premium refunds below the industry average, comparatively high administrative costs and a net interest yield below market level. Nürnberger belongs to the Nürnberger insurance group, which gives it a clear place in the market.

Frequently asked questions

Do I keep my ageing reserves if I change plan within Nürnberger?

Your ageing reserves are kept in full with an internal change under § 204 VVG. Only a switch to another insurer means that the calculated reserves are lost.

On what basis does Nürnberger increase the premium?

An adjustment is only permitted under the conditions of § 203 VVG. It requires a lasting change in benefit expenditure or mortality rates and must be reviewed and approved by an independent trustee.

How quickly do I need to respond?

A fixed deadline applies above all to the special right of termination under § 205 (4) VVG, namely two months after receipt of the notice. You can approach the internal change under § 204 VVG with more flexibility in timing.
