Premium increase at UKV: what now?

Exclusive tips from our experts on how to handle your premium adjustment.

01

Stay calm

A premium increase often seems drastic at first. But it is not an automatic reason to cancel. First check how large the adjustment really is and which benefits you get for your premium.

02

Read the notice carefully

The adjustment letter contains the key details: date, amount and reason for the increase. Above all, note the date of receipt, because important deadlines depend on it.

03

Plan change instead of a rash decision

Before you think about switching to another insurer, check whether a plan change under § 204 VVG within UKV makes sense. This is often the simpler way to a lower premium without setting up your cover completely from scratch.

04

Do not lose sight of your cover

A much lower premium often comes with reduced benefits. So check whether a cheaper plan still covers your most important benefits.

05

Use advice with private health insurance experience

With premium questions in particular, an independent assessment is worth it. We know the plan range of UKV and show you which options really fit your situation, without losing your ageing reserves.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.

It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.

How to read the financial position

UKV shows a mixed but fundamentally sound picture compared with the industry. Low administrative costs and a low complaints ratio speak for stable premiums. Points to note are a provision for premium refunds below the industry average and a net interest yield below market level. As part of Versicherungskammer, UKV has a clear place in the market.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my ageing reserves if I change plan?

With a plan change within UKV under § 204 VVG, the reserves are kept. You only lose them if you change company.

Is the premium increase at UKV lawful at all?

The premium may not rise arbitrarily. § 203 VVG only allows an adjustment if benefit expenditure or mortality rates have changed permanently. In addition, an independent trustee reviews every increase.

How much time do I have after the premium increase?

There is no fixed deadline for an internal plan change under § 204 VVG. If you want to use the special right of termination under § 205 (4) VVG, a deadline of two months after receipt of the notice applies. An early review gives you the most room to act.
