Assess first, then act
The first reaction to a premium adjustment is often anger. First get a clear overview before you think about consequences. What matters is how high the adjustment really is and what your plan offers for it.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.
It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.

Universa is a mutual insurance association with a long tradition. Its focus is on health and supplementary insurance. The following figures put the financial position into context, each compared with the insurer's own ten-year average and the industry average (as of 2024).
Above the industry average of 20.9 percent: a solid safety cushion.
Above the industry average of 2.8 per 100,000: more complaints than the market average.
Below the industry average of 2.9 percent: a lean, efficient cost structure.
| Indicator | Universa 2024 | 10-year average | Industry average |
|---|---|---|---|
| RfB ratio | 42.2% | 44.0% | 37.4% |
| RfB allocation ratio | 8.6% | 13.8% | 10.5% |
| Equity ratio | 33.8% | 32.7% | 20.9% |
| Net interest yield | 2.7% | 3.1% | 2.8% |
| Administrative cost ratio | 2.4% | 2.6% | 2.9% |
| Claims ratio | 81.2% | 76.2% | 75.1% |
| Acquisition cost ratio | 7.0% | 6.3% | 8.0% |
| Complaints ratio (per 100,000) | 3.7 | 3.2 | 2.8 |
Universa shows a mixed but fundamentally sound picture compared with the industry. An above-average provision for premium refunds and low administrative costs speak for stable premiums. Points to note are a net interest yield below market level and an increased complaints ratio. Universa is one of the oldest private health insurers in Germany, which gives it a clear place in the market.
No. With an internal change under § 204 VVG, your ageing reserves are kept in full. Only when you switch to another insurer are the calculated reserves lost.
The legal basis is § 203 VVG. An increase is only allowed if the calculated benefit expenditure or mortality rates have changed permanently, and it must be approved by an independent trustee.
You can start the plan change under § 204 VVG at any time. For the special right of termination under § 205 (4) VVG, however, you only have two months from receipt of the notice. If you check early, you keep all options open.
