Frequently asked questions about the Versicherungspflichtgrenze

Does the Versicherungspflichtgrenze apply to this year's income or last year's?
What counts is the regular annual pay you expect to earn in the current calendar year. This means gross pay without one-off payments such as vacation pay or a Christmas bonus. Your employer checks this at the start of the year and again with every lasting change in salary.
What happens if my salary is only just above the threshold?
The Versicherungspflichtgrenze works as a hard threshold. Anyone above it is no longer subject to compulsory insurance. However, the exemption only applies if your pay exceeds the threshold again in the following year. If your salary drops below it for good, compulsory statutory insurance returns. With variable pay components in particular, a careful check is worth it.
Is there a second, lower threshold for people with private cover for many years?
Yes. If you already had private health insurance before December 31, 2002, you only need to exceed the special Jahresarbeitsentgeltgrenze  (JAEG). In 2026 it is €69,750 per year, the same as the Beitragsbemessungsgrenze of statutory health insurance. For everyone else, the general JAEG of €77,400 applies.
