The key points about the benefit event in private health insurance at a glance.

01

The treatment date counts for the insurance year

It is not the date on which you submit a bill but, as a rule, the time of treatment that decides whether a benefit event counts in a given insurance year. This matters especially in plans with a no-claims refund.

02

A benefit event affects the no-claims refund

If you have no benefit event in the insurance year, you can receive a payment in plans with a no-claims refund. A single small bill can cost you this advantage for the whole year.

03

How it differs from the insured event

In the strict reading, the insured event is the event that is insured, meaning the onset of illness, while the benefit event means the actual use of a benefit. In practice, the two terms are often used as synonyms.

The benefit event in private health insurance: the details

How do the benefit event and the insured event differ?

In the terminology of some insurers, the benefit event and the insured event are largely synonymous. In other contexts, the insured event is the event that is insured, meaning the onset of illness, while the benefit event means the actual use of a benefit.

In the everyday life of privately insured people, this distinction is rarely relevant, but it can become important in disputes about the period in which a plan applies.

How are the benefit event and the no-claims refund connected?

In plans with a no-claims refund, it can pay to cover smaller bills yourself at first. The usual condition is that you claim no benefits that harm the refund in the relevant insurance or calendar year.

Which year a bill is assigned to depends in principle on the date of treatment or purchase and not on when you submit it. Before you submit small bills, you should therefore check whether the possible reimbursement is higher than the no-claims refund you would otherwise lose. The deductible and tax effects also have to be taken into account.

Which obligations apply after a benefit event?

After a benefit event, the policyholder has certain duties towards the insurer. These include:

If you breach these obligations, you risk a reduction of the reimbursement.

In a plan with a no-claims refund, we recommend that you check carefully which bills you submit and which you pay yourself. A deliberate decision for each insurance year can save real money.

When does a benefit event occur?

As soon as an illness or injury requires medically necessary treatment. From this point on, you have the contractual right to reimbursement, which you assert by submitting a claim.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.

It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.
