Premium increase at Debeka: what now?

Exclusive tips from our experts on how to handle your premium adjustment.

01

Assess first, then act

The first reaction to a premium adjustment is often anger. First get a clear overview before you think about consequences. What matters is how high the adjustment really is and what your plan offers for it.

02

Check the details in the letter

Go through the letter point by point. Which plan is affected, from when the new premium applies and how the adjustment is justified. Only with this information can you plan the next step.

03

Plan change instead of a rash decision

Before you think about switching to another insurer, check whether a plan change under § 204 VVG within Debeka makes sense. Debeka offers plans designed for the public sector that can be an alternative. This is often the simpler way to a lower premium without setting up your cover completely from scratch.

04

Compare benefits

When you look at another plan, the overall picture counts. An attractive price is of little use if key benefits that you will need later are missing.

05

Have your options reviewed neutrally

With a premium adjustment, an outside view helps. We are familiar with the plans of Debeka and find the way with you that fits your needs and keeps your reserves.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.

It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.

How to read the financial position

Debeka shows an uneven picture compared with the industry. Low administrative costs speak for stable premiums. Points to note are a provision for premium refunds below the industry average and a net interest yield below market level. Debeka is the largest mutual private health insurer, which gives it a clear place in the market.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my ageing reserves if I change plan?

No. With an internal change under § 204 VVG, your ageing reserves are kept in full. Only when you switch to another insurer are the calculated reserves lost.

May Debeka simply increase my premium?

The legal basis is § 203 VVG. An increase is only allowed if the calculated benefit expenditure or mortality rates have changed permanently, and it must be approved by an independent trustee.

Is there a deadline I need to keep?

You can start the plan change under § 204 VVG at any time. For the special right of termination under § 205 (4) VVG, however, you only have two months from receipt of the notice. If you check early, you keep all options open.
