Premium increase at Gothaer: what now?

Exclusive tips from our experts on how to handle your premium adjustment.

01

Check objectively

Do not let the first figure put you under pressure. A higher premium alone is no reason to cancel. What matters is the comparison between the new premium and the scope of your cover.

02

Check the letter carefully

Read the notice carefully. What matters is the effective date, the specific new premium and the stated trigger for the adjustment. This information is the basis for every further decision.

03

Plan change instead of a rash decision

Before you think about switching to another insurer, check whether a plan change under § 204 VVG within Gothaer makes sense. This is often the simpler way to a lower premium without setting up your cover completely from scratch.

04

Weigh price and benefits

When you compare plans, do not look at the premium alone. What matters is that the cover still fits your health and professional situation.

05

Get an independent second opinion

A neutral second opinion brings clarity. We know the plans of Gothaer and check together with you which option protects your ageing reserves and can still lower the premium.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.

It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.

How to read the financial position

Gothaer shows a mixed but fundamentally sound picture compared with the industry. Low administrative costs and an above-average net interest yield speak for stable premiums. A point to note is a provision for premium refunds below the industry average. Gothaer is organized as a mutual insurance association, which gives it a clear place in the market.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my ageing reserves if I change plan?

No. With an internal change under § 204 VVG, your ageing reserves are kept in full. Only when you switch to another insurer are the calculated reserves lost.

May Gothaer simply increase my premium?

The legal basis is § 203 VVG. An increase is only allowed if the calculated benefit expenditure or mortality rates have changed permanently, and it must be approved by an independent trustee.

Is there a deadline I need to keep?

You can start the plan change under § 204 VVG at any time. For the special right of termination under § 205 (4) VVG, however, you only have two months from receipt of the notice. If you check early, you keep all options open.
