Assess first, then act
The first reaction to a premium adjustment is often anger. First get a clear overview before you think about consequences. What matters is how high the adjustment really is and what your plan offers for it.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.
It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.

Hanse Merkur is an established private health insurer with a focus on the Hamburg area. Its focus is on health, supplementary and travel insurance. The following figures put the financial position into context, each compared with the insurer's own ten-year average and the industry average (as of 2024).
Below the industry average of 2.9 percent: a lean, efficient cost structure.
Below the industry average of 2.8 per 100,000: few complaints, high satisfaction.
Below the industry average of 2.8 percent: lower investment income, to be considered in the overall picture.
| Indicator | Hanse Merkur 2024 | 10-year average | Industry average |
|---|---|---|---|
| RfB ratio | 35.0% | 48.3% | 37.4% |
| RfB allocation ratio | 5.5% | 12.0% | 10.5% |
| Equity ratio | 19.2% | 18.6% | 20.9% |
| Net interest yield | 2.4% | 3.4% | 2.8% |
| Administrative cost ratio | 1.9% | 2.0% | 2.9% |
| Claims ratio | 76.9% | 72.1% | 75.1% |
| Acquisition cost ratio | 14.5% | 12.8% | 8.0% |
| Complaints ratio (per 100,000) | 1.9 | 2.2 | 2.8 |
Hanse Merkur shows a mixed but fundamentally sound picture compared with the industry. Low administrative costs and a low complaints ratio speak for stable premiums. Points to note are a provision for premium refunds below the industry average and a net interest yield below market level. Hanse Merkur is an independent insurer from Hamburg, which gives it a clear place in the market.
With a plan change within Hanse Merkur under § 204 VVG, the reserves are kept. You only lose them if you change company.
The premium may not rise arbitrarily. § 203 VVG only allows an adjustment if benefit expenditure or mortality rates have changed permanently. In addition, an independent trustee reviews every increase.
There is no fixed deadline for an internal plan change under § 204 VVG. If you want to use the special right of termination under § 205 (4) VVG, a deadline of two months after receipt of the notice applies. An early review gives you the most room to act.
