Premium increase at LKH: what now?

Exclusive tips from our experts on how to handle your premium adjustment.

01

Check objectively

Do not let the first figure put you under pressure. A higher premium alone is no reason to cancel. What matters is the comparison between the new premium and the scope of your cover.

02

Check the letter carefully

Read the notice carefully. What matters is the effective date, the specific new premium and the stated trigger for the adjustment. This information is the basis for every further decision.

03

Plan change instead of a rash decision

Before you think about switching to another insurer, check whether a plan change under § 204 VVG within LKH makes sense. This is often the simpler way to a lower premium without setting up your cover completely from scratch.

04

Weigh price and benefits

When you compare plans, do not look at the premium alone. What matters is that the cover still fits your health and professional situation.

05

Have your options reviewed neutrally

With a premium adjustment, an outside view helps. We are familiar with the plans of LKH and find the way with you that fits your needs and keeps your reserves.

How to read the financial position

LKH shows a mixed but fundamentally sound picture compared with the industry. An above-average provision for premium refunds and low administrative costs speak for stable premiums. Points to note are a net interest yield below market level and an increased complaints ratio. LKH is rooted as a regional insurer in northern Germany, which gives it a clear place in the market.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my ageing reserves if I change plan?

With a plan change within LKH under § 204 VVG, the reserves are kept. You only lose them if you change company.

Is the premium increase at LKH lawful at all?

The premium may not rise arbitrarily. § 203 VVG only allows an adjustment if benefit expenditure or mortality rates have changed permanently. In addition, an independent trustee reviews every increase.

How much time do I have after the premium increase?

There is no fixed deadline for an internal plan change under § 204 VVG. If you want to use the special right of termination under § 205 (4) VVG, a deadline of two months after receipt of the notice applies. An early review gives you the most room to act.
