Plan combination AZ Comfort-U, AZ SP2
Suitable for Students
Data as of July 2026, source: plan terms and our advisory practice

Why this plan is in our selection

The combination of AZ Comfort-U and AZ SP2 is Continentale's route for students and is in our selection for free choice of doctor without a primary doctor principle. As a student you can take out private insurance if you are not compulsorily insured in a statutory health insurance fund, for example after an exemption from compulsory insurance at the start of your studies. This exemption applies for your entire studies and cannot be withdrawn. Because of the young entry age, the premium is moderate, which we rate at 7 out of 10 points. For outpatient care there is no requirement to go through a family doctor, and every medical treatment is reimbursed within the fee schedule. The module AZ SP2 adds a two-bed room and private doctor treatment, and private clinics are reimbursed. We rate benefit coverage at 7 out of 10 points as solid. In return there is a deductible of €20 per benefit, and the plan has a high no-claims refund. The plan offers no option right for higher-level cover after your studies, and we put this point into context further down.

01

High no-claims refund

The plan combines a guaranteed lump-sum payment with a performance-based refund. After a claim-free calendar year there are two monthly premiums, and after two, three, four and five claim-free years an additional one, two, three and four monthly premiums. The condition is that no claims are made in the entire plan.

02

Free choice of doctor without a primary doctor principle

Unlike many digital plans for students, Continentale works here without a requirement to go through a family doctor. You choose your doctor freely, and every outpatient medical treatment is reimbursed within the fee schedule, without a detour through a primary care provider.

03

Deductible of €20 per benefit

€20 per treatment or benefit are deducted from the reimbursement amount, on outpatient, inpatient and dental costs. Upper limits of the plan apply, for example €20 per day for at most 14 days for hospital services and €50 per medical aid.

It is less suitable if you want reimbursement entirely without a deductible, need an option right for higher-level cover after your studies or expect extensive dental work early on. For these cases we show you better plans for students in our advice.

Frequently asked questions

When can I take out private insurance as a student?

If you are not compulsorily insured in a statutory health insurance fund. This is the case if you are exempted from compulsory insurance at the start of your studies or if compulsory student insurance ends. The exemption applies for your entire studies and cannot be withdrawn, so we check it carefully beforehand. Before you apply, it is worth looking at the health questions.

Does this plan have a primary doctor principle?

No. Continentale reimburses outpatient medical treatment with free choice of doctor, without treatment having to start with a family doctor or primary care doctor. Reimbursement is controlled instead through the deductible of the plan of €20 per benefit.

How does the deductible work?

€20 per treatment or benefit are deducted from the reimbursement amount, on outpatient, inpatient and dental costs. Upper limits apply, for example €20 per day for at most 14 days for hospital services, €20 per day for medical and dental services and €50 per medical aid. For generics there is no deductible.

Do I need Krankentagegeld as a student?

Usually not. During your studies there is no earned income to protect that could be lost through illness. The plan therefore includes no Krankentagegeld . Because it also offers no option right for higher-level cover, we plan the path after your studies separately in the plan analysis.

What happens if premiums rise?

Premium adjustments are part of how private health insurance works. What matters is their long-term size. In addition, the plan for students rises when you reach an age band. We keep putting the premium adjustments at Continentale into context and check plan optimization if increases are large.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.

It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.
