Why this plan is in our selection
This Hanse Merkur solution for students consists of three modules and is in our selection as a low-cost entry option. KVS1A is the outpatient main plan with a family doctor and primary doctor principle: if treatment starts with a primary doctor, 100 percent is reimbursed, otherwise 80 percent, and telemedicine services are covered at 100 percent. PSVA is the inpatient top-up plan and raises accommodation to a single or two-bed room with private doctor treatment. EKV2A adds cancer screening to the combination with a special blood test each year and, if the result is abnormal, imaging procedures, plus a dental top-up from the seventh year of insurance. As a student you can take out private insurance if you are not compulsorily insured in a statutory health insurance fund, for example after an exemption from compulsory insurance at the start of your studies. Because of the young entry age the premium is low, which we rate at 9 out of 10 points. We rate benefit coverage as solid at 7 out of 10 points. The option right is important, because it allows a later switch to higher-level cover.
01
Low-cost plan for students
Because of the young entry age the premium is low, which we rate at 9 out of 10 points. Telemedicine services are reimbursed at 100 percent, and instead of a no-claims refund Hanse Merkur relies on a premium for students that is calculated low from the start.
02
Extensive cancer screening through EKV2A
The supplementary module EKV2A reimburses one special blood test for cancer screening each year and, if the result is abnormal, imaging procedures such as PET-CT, head and neck MRI or prostate MRI from the main plan. This screening does not depend on the deductible of the plan.
03
Primary doctor principle with telemedicine
The outpatient main plan KVS1A reimburses 100 percent if the first treatment starts with a primary doctor, otherwise 80 percent. Telemedicine consultations with doctors are covered at 100 percent, so part of your care can take place digitally.

Who this plan suits
This combination suits students who want low-cost cover with inpatient comfort and strong cancer screening and who are comfortable going through a family doctor or primary doctor and with telemedicine care.
It is less suitable if you want every specialist bill fully reimbursed from the start without a primary doctor principle, need strong outpatient psychotherapy or value high benefits for visual aids. For these cases we show you better plans for students in our advice.
Premium development at Hanse Merkur: A plan is only as good as its calculation. We show the adjustments of past years transparently by year and plan.
When can I take out private insurance as a student?
⌄
If you are not compulsorily insured in a statutory health insurance fund. This is the case if you are exempted from compulsory insurance at the start of your studies or if compulsory student insurance ends, for example at age 30 or after the 14th semester. The exemption applies for your entire studies and cannot be withdrawn, so we check it carefully beforehand. You can find more in our private health insurance advice for students.
What does the primary doctor principle mean at Hanse Merkur?
⌄
You receive 100 percent reimbursement if the first treatment starts with a general practitioner, an internist without a specialty, a gynecologist, pediatrician or ophthalmologist or an emergency doctor. If you start treatment directly with another specialist without this route, it is 80 percent. Telemedicine consultations with doctors are reimbursed at 100 percent.
What does the EKV2A module provide for cancer screening?
⌄
EKV2A reimburses one special blood test for cancer screening each year. If the test result is abnormal, imaging procedures such as PET-CT, head and neck MRI or prostate MRI from the main plan are added. This screening does not depend on the deductible of the plan. In addition, EKV2A expands dental benefits from the 7th year of insurance.
What happens if premiums rise?
⌄
Premium adjustments are part of how private health insurance works. What matters is their long-term size. In addition, the plan for students rises when you reach an age band. We put the development of Hanse Merkur's premiums into context in our plan analysis, and if increases are large we check plan optimization.
How is our rating calculated?
⌄
The five key figures come from our ongoing plan analysis. They are based on the plan terms, the published premium histories and our experience with claims handling from advisory practice. The rating is our professional assessment, not a ranking by a testing institute.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.
From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.
It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.
