Expert tips

Which billing route pays and how you plan a course of treatment properly.

01

With a doctor usually without a budget limit

Acupuncture by doctors with the relevant additional qualification is billed under the fee schedule and the normal outpatient plan, usually without the annual limits of the module for naturopathic treatments. When you book an appointment, it is therefore worth asking about the doctor's qualification.

02

Calculate the course in advance

Ten to fifteen sessions at €30 to €80 add up to several hundred euros. We recommend that you check the plan clause before you start a course of treatment and get a written confirmation of cover for longer courses.

03

Know how statutory insurance compares

The statutory health insurance fund pays for acupuncture only for chronic lower back pain and knee osteoarthritis, under fixed rules. In private health insurance, reimbursement depends on the plan and the medical reason, not on two approved diagnoses.

04

Have the diagnosis documented

A properly documented diagnosis, for example chronic back pain or migraine, supports medical necessity. No plan reimburses treatment without a link to an illness, for example for relaxation.

Acupuncture in private health insurance in detail

Doctor or alternative practitioner: which billing routes are there?

For the reimbursement of acupuncture in private health insurance, the practitioner is the most important switch. Doctors with the additional qualification in acupuncture bill under the official fee schedule for doctors. These bills go through the outpatient part of the plan and are subject to the plan's GOÄ factor, usually up to 2.3 or 3.5 times the base rate. Alternative practitioners bill along the lines of their fee schedule, and these bills fall under the module for naturopathic treatments with its annual maximum, often €1,000 to €3,000 for all methods together.

In practice, this means the following. If your plan has no module for naturopathic treatments, you can still get acupuncture reimbursed through the route via a doctor. Conversely, every session with an alternative practitioner reduces the shared annual budget, which you may also need for osteopathy or homeopathy.

What does acupuncture cost and which clauses apply?

At €30 to €80 per session, acupuncture is one of the cheaper naturopathic treatments, but the length of the course drives the total. With twelve sessions, the total cost is between €360 and €960. Typical areas of use are chronic back pain, migraine and tension headaches, as well as joint complaints. Whether it suits your case is assessed by the practitioner, not by an insurance guide.

In the plan, three clauses decide. The first is the scientific recognition clause or the Hufeland clause, which allows the method in principle. Then there is the route of reimbursement, with its factor or budget, and any limit on the number of sessions per case of treatment. In the plan, acupuncture counts among the naturopathic treatments covered by the module for alternative medicine. The scientific assessment of acupuncture differs depending on the area of use. For reimbursement, the plan clause counts. All amounts are guide values.

What do we recommend if you have acupuncture regularly?

From our contract support work, the most common mistake we see is the unspoken assumption that acupuncture is insured the same way everywhere. In fact, the range goes from a plan that reimburses acupuncture by doctors without limit to a plan that excludes it completely. We recommend that you clarify your own route to reimbursement before the first course. In concrete terms, this is about who treats you, under which schedule the treatment is billed and which pot pays.

If you need treatment regularly, we also recommend that you look for an explicit reference to acupuncture or the Hufeland directory at your next plan comparison. This saves you a case-by-case discussion about the recognition of the method.

How many acupuncture sessions does private health insurance reimburse?

There is a fixed upper limit only if the plan states one. The usual practice is to reimburse a medically justified course, often ten to fifteen sessions, and more if the indication continues. With an alternative practitioner, the annual budget is an additional limit.

Does private health insurance pay for acupuncture during pregnancy?

If there is a medical reason, for example morning sickness or treatment to prepare for birth, many plans reimburse acupuncture by doctors. The clauses differ. A confirmation of cover in advance gives you clarity.

Is ear acupuncture reimbursed in the same way as body acupuncture?

Plans usually do not distinguish by technique but by practitioner and reason. What counts is still medically necessary treatment. The practitioner chooses the technique.

What does acupuncture cost with a doctor compared with an alternative practitioner?

The ranges overlap at €30 to €80 per session. The difference lies less in the price than in the billing route. Bills from doctors go through the outpatient plan under the fee schedule, bills from alternative practitioners through the budget for naturopathic treatments.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.

From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.

It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.
