Data as ofJuly 2026, source: plan terms and our advisory practice
Why this plan is in our selection
The DKV PremiumMed is in our selection for children because it reaches the full score for scope of benefits and is therefore one of the strongest plans in our selection. For families this means top cover without compromise: a single room in hospital, remedies at 100 percent without the limit of the federal allowance regulation for civil servants, telemedicine reimbursed in full and, for dental care, orthodontics at 100 percent without any dental benefit limits. We rate claims handling at 9 out of 10 points and the premium history at 8 out of 10 as more reliable than average. At 6 out of 10 points, the starting premium is one of the higher ones, which is the price for the substance. If you deliberately want to give your child the highest benefit level and accept a somewhat higher premium for it, the PremiumMed is one of the strongest options.
01
Top cover without a deductible
For scope of benefits we give 10 out of 10 points, so the plan is one of the strongest in our selection. In concrete terms this means a single room in hospital, remedies at 100 percent without the limit of the federal allowance regulation for civil servants and telemedicine reimbursed in full, all without a deductible.
02
Full orthodontics without dental benefit limits
Unlike many plans for children, the PremiumMed does completely without dental benefit limits. Dental treatment is reimbursed at 100 percent, dentures at 90 percent and orthodontics up to age 18 at 100 percent. Especially for children, braces later on are fully covered from the start.
03
Advantages for families
Children can be insured alone from birth. A guaranteed lump-sum payment after a claim-free year and a performance-based refund also apply to children, and fertility treatment is fully covered for organic infertility.

No plan is the right choice for everyone. This is what speaks for this combination, and this is what you should know.

What you should know
!
At 6 out of 10 points, the starting premium is one of the higher ones in our selection. The high benefit level has its price.
!
Orthodontics is limited to treatment starting up to age 18, except after an accident. For children this is usually not critical, but you should know it.
!
No simplified right to switch to higher-level plans is included. The statutory right to change plan still applies.
!
The admission of a companion in hospital is limited to children up to age 10.
Who this plan suits
The PremiumMed suits families who deliberately want to give their child the highest benefit level and accept a somewhat higher premium for it. Especially for families who want braces later on to be fully covered from the start, the absence of dental benefit limits is a strong argument.
The plan fits less well if the lowest premium is the priority or if lean basic cover is enough. For these cases we show cheaper alternatives from our comparison in our advice.
Premium development at DKV: A plan is only as good as its calculation. We show the adjustments of past years transparently by year and plan.
Why is the absence of dental benefit limits so important in a plan for children?
⌄
Many plans cap dentures and orthodontics in the first years through dental benefit limits. The PremiumMed does completely without them, so even braces needed early on are fully covered. You can read more on the topic under dentures and implants.
From when can my child be insured alone with the PremiumMed?
⌄
Children can be insured alone from birth. Otherwise, directly after birth, cover runs through the Kindernachversicherung of a privately insured parent, without any health questions.
Can the plan be adjusted later?
⌄
There is an option right for a lower deductible without a risk assessment. However, the PremiumMed has no simplified right to switch to higher-level plans, so the benefit level should fit from the start. The statutory right to change plan under § 204 VVG also applies.
What happens to the premium when my child gets older?
⌄
The premium rises with the technical entry age. If an adjustment is large, we check plan optimization together, and you can find the specific premium adjustments at DKV in our overview.
How is our rating calculated?
⌄
The five key figures come from our ongoing plan analysis. They are based on the plan terms, the published premium histories and our experience with claims handling. The rating is our professional assessment, not a ranking by a testing institute.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.
From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.
It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.
