Why this plan is in our selection
The Hanse Merkur combination of KVS3, EKV2 and PSV is in our selection for the self-employed above all because of its price: we rate the premium level at 10 out of 10 points, so the premium is very low, and premium stability at a solid 8 out of 10 points. Two levers make this possible. The plan works with a deductible of €1,000 a year on outpatient and dental benefits and with a family doctor principle. The structure is modular. KVS3 is the main plan for outpatient and dental benefits, EKV2 adds cancer screening and later raises the dental benefit limits, and PSV brings a single or two-bed room and a private doctor in hospital. We rate the benefit level at 6 out of 10 points, the leanest value in the comparison group. If you want a low-cost entry and accept a deductible and going through a family doctor, you will find a strong price argument here.
01
Very low starting premium
We rate the premium level at 10 out of 10 points, the highest value in the comparison group. The low premium comes from a deductible of €1,000 a year on outpatient and dental benefits, a family doctor principle and a modular structure in which individual modules can be adjusted in a targeted way.
02
Extensive cancer screening
From age 18, the top-up plan EKV2 reimburses one special blood test for cancer screening each year. If the result is abnormal, imaging procedures such as PET-CT and head and neck or prostate MRI from the main plan are added.
03
Health discount at the start
From age 20, people who pass a health check receive a health discount of 10 percent from the second month, initially until the middle of the second year of insurance. It can be extended by twelve months at a time.

The combination suits the self-employed and freelancers who want a low, reliable premium, accept a deductible and are comfortable going through a family doctor, and who have a healthy lifestyle that secures the health discount.
It is less suitable if you expect a high benefit level, free choice of specialist without going through a primary doctor, high reimbursement for visual aids or fertility treatment. For these cases we show you better alternatives from our comparison in our advice.
Premium development at Hanse Merkur: A plan is only as good as its calculation. We show the adjustments of past years transparently by year and plan.
Why does the combination consist of three modules?
⌄
KVS3 is the main plan for outpatient and dental benefits. The top-up plan EKV2 adds cancer screening and raises the dental benefit limits from the seventh year. PSV brings a single or two-bed room and private doctor treatment in hospital. This modular logic makes the combination adjustable: if you want to save on hospital cover, you can leave out PSV and lower your premium.
Can I deduct my premiums from tax as a self-employed person?
⌄
You can claim the basic share of your premium, meaning cover at the level of statutory basic care, as pension and insurance expenses for tax purposes. We explain the details and maximum amounts under deducting private health insurance from tax.
Can I adjust the combination later?
⌄
Within Hanse Merkur you can switch to similar plans using the right to change plan under § 204 VVG, and you keep your ageing reserves. The main plan KVS3 also includes an option right for higher-level cover in the 4th, 6th and 8th year of insurance.
What happens if premiums rise?
⌄
Premium adjustments are part of how private health insurance works. What matters is their long-term size. You can find Hanse Merkur's specific adjustments by year and plan in our overview of premium adjustments. If an increase is large, we check plan optimization with you.
How is our rating calculated?
⌄
The five key figures come from our ongoing plan analysis. They are based on the plan terms, the published premium histories and our experience with claims handling from advisory practice. The rating is our professional assessment, not a ranking by a testing institute.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.
From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.
It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.
