Why this plan is in our selection
The Hanse Merkur combination of KVT500 and PSV is in our selection for children because it combines solid private cover with a low starting premium. The outpatient and dental plan KVT500 covers everyday care, and the PSV module raises hospital cover to a single or two-bed room with a private doctor. Especially important for families: children pay no deductible up to age 20, and a child can be insured with Hanse Merkur from birth without a parent who is also insured. We rate the premium history and the starting premium at 8 out of 10 points each, and claims handling at 8 out of 10. For scope of benefits we see 7 out of 10 points, and here the combination is solid rather than top class. If you want affordable private cover for your child with optional hospital services, this combination is a convincing option.
01
No deductible for children
KVT500 generally works with an annual deductible of €500 for outpatient and dental benefits. Children and young people up to age 20 are exempt and pay no share themselves. Lump sums for preventive care also remain free of the deductible.
02
Cover from birth
A child can be insured alone with Hanse Merkur from birth, and cover can start on the day of birth. Entitlement to benefits exists from birth if the waiting periods are waived on the basis of the children's checkups. A parent who is also insured is not required for this.
03
Private doctor and choice of room through the PSV module
The basic plan KVT500 secures standard services in a multi-bed room, and the additional PSV module raises hospital cover to a single or two-bed room with private doctor treatment. This lets you upgrade inpatient cover in a targeted way while the basic premium stays low.

Strengths and limits
No plan is the right choice for everyone. This is what speaks for this combination, and this is what you should know.
What speaks for it
✓
Children pay no deductible up to age 20, so everyday care is covered without an own share.
✓
Cover from birth without a co-insured parent, with the policy starting on the date of birth.
✓
Low starting premium and a reliable premium history with 8 out of 10 points each.
✓
Optional hospital services through the module PSV, with a single or two-bed room and private doctor.
What you should know
!
For the scope of benefits we see 7 out of 10 points. The plan is solid, but not in the top group of our selection.
!
Dentures and orthodontics are reimbursed at 80 percent, and the dental benefit limits apply into the seventh year. If you plan larger dental treatment early, you should factor this in.
!
Outpatient psychotherapy is limited to 50 sessions per year and needs prior approval.
!
Cover abroad outside Europe is reduced from the second month, and there is no option for higher-level cover.
Who this plan suits
The combination suits families who want to give their child affordable private cover with optional hospital services and who value a low, stable premium. The early start from birth and the absence of a deductible for children also speak for it.
The combination is less suitable if you want the highest dental and benefit level or particularly strong cover abroad from the start. For these cases we show you stronger alternatives from our comparison in our advice.

Does my child pay a deductible with this combination?
⌄
No. The KVT500 does have an annual deductible of €500 in principle, but children and young people up to age 20 are exempt from it. The own share only applies after that.
From when can my child be insured with this combination?
⌄
A child can be insured alone at Hanse Merkur from birth, and the policy can start on the date of birth. Alternatively, cover runs directly after birth through the Kindernachversicherung of a privately insured parent.
What is the module PSV for?
⌄
The KVT500 covers standard services in a multi-bed room. The PSV raises hospital cover to a single or two-bed room with private doctor and adds a substitute daily hospital allowance and repatriation from abroad. This keeps the basic premium low while the optional hospital services are still covered.
What happens to the premium when my child gets older?
⌄
The premium rises with the technical entry age, and from age 20 the exemption from the deductible ends. If an adjustment is large, we check plan optimization together, and you can find the specific premium adjustments of Hanse Merkur in our overview.
How is our rating calculated?
⌄
The five key figures come from our ongoing plan analysis. They are based on the plan terms, the published premium histories and our experience with claims handling. The rating is our professional assessment, not a ranking by a testing institute.

Switching to private health insurance is probably not advisable for you.
From the age of 55, admission to private health insurance is often possible only with restrictions. A late switch can also mean higher premiums.
It matters to us that a switch pays off for you in the long run. That is why we do not recommend a consultation when your answers already show that the conditions are rather unfavorable.
